About the School

Description of the School

Aka Aka School is a decile 8 state co-educational full primary school situated in Aka Aka.  Aka Aka is a wonderful rural community 10 kilometres from Waiuku and 15 kilometres from Pukekohe situated by the Waikato River. 

The school has maintained a roll of 80 - 100 students over the past three years.  Aka Aka School has many facilities and resources:

  • Four classrooms
  • A newly renovated library (2009)
  • A computer suite
  • A music learning space
  • A modern school and community hall
  • A modern office administration area
  • Two curriculum resource rooms
  • Large junior and senior playgrounds with covered sandpit
  • Swimming pool
  • Sports shed
  • Tennis courts
  • Large sports field and concrete play areas.
  • Attractive trees and gardens

As Aka Aka is a rural community, Aka Aka School is the focal point of the community.  We are fortunate to have a supportive parent community who work with the school to support their child's learning.

Aka Aka School has incorporated 'assessment for learning' principles in our learning programmes and teacher plan programmes using the principles within a framework of our shared vision.

Our Vision
 
During their time at Aka Aka School children will:

  • be confident in Literacy and Numeracy

  • know when they are successful by using the self-assessment process

During their time at Aka Aka School teachers will:
  • be reflective practitioners who will continue their own professional learning journey
  • examine their current practice in order to make deliberate and informed choices about their practice
  • demonstrate current pedagogy: teaching and learning practice
  • put students at the centre of their learning
  • provide a curriculum that engages and challenges learners
  • care for the students as individuals and learners
  • provide regular reporting to parents on student achievement
  • work with parents to support children’s learning
  • help the student understand what successful learning looks like
  • assist students during the learning process, and identify their success and the next learning steps

Learning Programmes

Aka Aka School provides learning programmes based on the New Zealand Curriculum in the 7 learning areas of: English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, The Arts, Technology, and Health and Physical Education.

At Aka Aka School there is a major focus on reading, writing and mathematics.  There are also learning opportunities in Tikanga Maori and Te Reo Maori, and the Year 7 and 8 students participate in technicraft classes of woodwork and metalwork, art, cooking and sewing at View Road School.

Aka Aka School cares deeply about the students' learning.  There are clear expectations for the students which underpin all aspects of school life and they are explicit in all areas of schools - the learning environment, the school playground and activities outside the school grounds.

At Aka Aka School, there is a strong focus on the improvement of student achievement.  Student Achievement Targets are agreed every year - in 2010 the targets are

The results of the targets and other curriculum reports are reported to the Board and the community every year.
