AKA AKA SCHOOL PACIFICA TRIP 10 AUGUST 2010 A Recount by Briar Anstis - Year 8 On Tuesday the 10th August Aka Aka School had a school trip to the Pacifica Centre as the classes are learning about the Pacific Islands. Some of the school went in cars and some in the bus. When we arrived at 10.30 we sat in a big room and were told what was planned for the day and the rules. First up we were told about Island weaving and how to do it. The junior children of the school made woven headbands and the senior school made beehives which was a different and challenging task. At the start we were shown instructions then we started. At the start I found it really hard but I'm sure other people found it challenging as well. About half an hour later I was finally finished and we were waiting on a couple of other people. The leader blew his horn and all of us had to sit on the mat. He explained to us what sort of dance we were doing next and the moves to get it right. All the girls had to stand up first and we were shown the actions. Mostly we just had to sway our hips from side to side. The song that we started dancing to was called Pearly Shells, and I think Ms Mitchell found it quite catchy. The man then taught us the moves and was singing it. He was a good singer and he also sung Over the Rainbow with his ukelele. He showed us all his instruments and we had to guess the prices as well. He had drums and guitars. When we finished that we walked over to the place where the umu was being cooked. We were told how it was cooked and information about it. After lunch there was a farewell from everyone. We went back to our cars or the bus and drove back to school. I had a fun day and enjoyed myself and wouldn't mind going again. |
